The Great Canadian Picnic

Canada Day New York, Canadian specialty food producers, culinary and media personalities, and Perfect Picnic NYC welcome New Yorkers to an inaugural al fresco meet-up picnic-fashion in Central Park June 29. Showcasing the best of culinary Canada, the Great Canadian Picnic welcomes everyone to a special gathering in the afternoon of June 29.

Co-hosted by Canada Day New York and Perfect Picnic NYC, speciality Canadian picnic and culinary items will be available free with suggested $5 donations to support relief efforts for victims of flooding victims in Calgary, Alberta. Bring a blanket and pack some treats and loved ones to gather on the grass to celebrate all things Canada. Sample goodies like these from:

Waldorf Astoria New York rooftop garden honey and lavender shortbread cookies
Canadian Chef David Garcelon, Director of Culinary Waldorf Astoria New York

ACE Bakery Baguettes
Traditional French white bread — with a creamy fully developed flavour and a perfectly crisp golden crust — are always a favourite at any meal, from a casual picnic lunch to an elegant dinner party.

Kicking Horse Coffee
One of Canada’s most popular organic coffees, Kicking Horse offers blends and single-bean varietals that come from the best coffee-growing mountains of the world. All roasted for optimum enjoyment.

Raincoast Crisp Crackers
These fabulous artisan raincoast crisps are baked with care in small batches from scratch using the finest-quality ingredients. Great to nibble on their own, they really shine when topped with a favourite dip, cheese, or antipasto.

Neal Brothers Maple Bacon Potato Chips
Organic, delicious and inspired by Canadian favourites — maple and bacon — Neal Brothers has perfected and package for you.

Green Walnut & Grappa Preserve
The Preservatory @ Vista D’oro Farms Ltd. created this preserve with Green Walnuts grown on its Langley, British Columbia farm. Picked in July on Bastille Day, before the nut forms, then mascerated in Brandy for 9 months, before they are pressed off and sent to the Preservatory. The walnut brandy is then used in our flagship wine D’oro - a fortified Walnut Wine. A heady combination utilizing the now dried and brandy infused green walnuts, combined with farm fresh apple jelly, sugar, lemon juice and finished with a dose of Grappa. Perfect on a charcuterie board, pairing with cheese or to really up the ante on a burger!

Figs & Walnut Wine Preserve
The Preservatory @Vista D’oro Farms Ltd. hails this preserve as its bestseller since they began selling it, 10 years ago. It’s a perfect pairing for Blue cheese, but does well with almost any other cheese. Makes a killer vinaigrette when combined with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and a little olive oil, salt & pepper.

Holy Crap Cereal
This cereal is certified organic USDA, gluten-free, lactose-free, sugar-free, salt-free, vegan, certified kosher- and tastes great. The name is unusual, but Holycrap cereal is what customers called the amazing taste when it was HapiFoods cereal, so they changed the name and had a 1,000% increase in sales. Its three main ingredients are some of the oldest perfect foods known to humans. no GMO, USDA organic certified, Kosher certified, chia, hulled hemp hearts, organic buckwheat, cranberries, raisins, apple bits, and cinnamon.

Almond Butter Crunch
by Fraser Valley Gourmet of Surrey, British Columbia
Katherine Geiger has always had a love for baking - chocolate and candy making in particular. It was this fascination, in fact, that resulted in the fortuitous acquiring of a basic almond butter crunch recipe in the 1980′s. This premium, handcrafted candy offers unrivalled flavour and nothing artificial.

Ethical Bean Coffee
Ethical Bean aims to make the best fair trade certified organic, environmentally happy coffee on the planet. https://www.ethicalbean.com

First music line up for Canada Day in New York City announced!

Music lovers, foodies, families and hockey fans are set to gather for this inaugural free summer festival in Central Park on June 29.

Saturday June 29 will be an unforgettable free celebration of Canada’s best entertainment, food and personalities in New York City. For the first time, Canada Day International, the organizers behind the hugely successful Canada Day in London, are producing Canada Day in New York, a free cultural, sport and music festival in Central Park.

With support from Presenting Sponsor BlackBerry, the festival promises to celebrate all things Canadian in the heart of New York City. The daytime festivities will take place at the Naumberg Bandshell in Central Park with highlights including photo opportunities with members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a food festival featuring top Canadian chefs and an action packed charitable street hockey tournament with NHL Player and Alumni appearances.

A free Canada Day Concert will take place in the evening at Rumsey Playfield as part of SummerStage Concert Series presented by AT&T. Award winning Canadian bands Brasstrounaut, Spirit of the West and Joel Plaskett are the first confirmed artists. The special guest headliner will be announced on May 22, 2013.

“The stage is set in New York’s Central Park for a wonderful grand-scale celebration of Canada,” says New York’s Consul General of Canada, John F. Prato. “Introducing our country’s innovative artists, chefs, winemakers, and more to New Yorkers underlines not only the excellence of Canadian exports across the spectrum but also the special nature of the relationship between New York and Canada. This event celebrates an important date in Canada’s history, and we are very pleased to mark the occasion in Central Park, one of this city’s jewels, with our friends from across the tri-state region.”

In 1867, Canada became a kingdom in its own right. Outdoor parades, festivals, barbeques, air shows, fireworks, concerts and special ceremonies for new citizens unite the country in celebration. With more than 300,000 Canadians residing in New York, this event is set to become one of largest celebrations of Canada Day outside of Canada.

“We are committed to promoting Canada and its vibrant culture, food, tourism, music, business, and technology on a global stage and adding New York as a second city for our festival presents a natural choice”, says Chad Molleken, Executive Director of Canada Day International.

“Canada Day London has attracted more than 350,000 visitors to date and continues growing. We bring together families with kids, students, hockey fans and music lovers from all backgrounds and nationalities to enjoy an entertainment packed day and create a great platform for our sponsors to connect with the public. Come and meet the Mounties, cheer on a hockey game, feast during the first Great Canadian Picnic or just come and relax in Central Park, we are set to bring a little bit of Canada for everyone!”

This festival would not be possible without the generous sponsor support from BlackBerry, Porter Airlines, Rainmaker Global Business Development, Thomson Reuters, TD Bank, RBC Capital Markets and CIBC and partnerships with City Parks Foundation, SummerStage: Presented by AT&T, the Canadian Association of New York and the endorsement of the Consulate General of Canada in New York.
